PCI-X
PCI-X (Peripheral Component Interconnect Extended) cards are backwards compatible with PCI slots (though it will run at the speed of the PCI bus). You can use PCI cards on a PCI-X bus but all cards will run at the speed of the slowest card.
PCI-X should not to be confused with PCI Express, a radical departure in connectivity standard, which is not backwards compatible.
